How Do I Clean and Maintain My Hardwood Floors?

Maintaining your hardwood flooring is essential to extending the life of your investment.  At Lady Baltimore Floors we offer a comprehensive Cleaning Kit that is essential to keeping your hardwood floors looking as beautiful as the day they were installed.

Yes, you can use a vacuum with a hardwood floor attachment, which has soft bristles or a brush roll designed for hardwood floors. Avoid vacuums with beater bars, as they can scratch the wood.

To prevent scratches, use area rugs or mats in high-traffic areas. Place felt pads under furniture legs, and trim pet nails regularly. Avoid walking on hardwood floors with high heels or shoes with sharp objects.

Luxury vinyl flooring is water-resistant, but excessive moisture should be avoided. Use a damp (not soaking wet) mop with a mild vinyl floor cleaner or a mixture of water and a few drops of dish soap for routine cleaning.

Steam mops can damage the adhesive used in luxury vinyl flooring, so it’s best to avoid using them. Stick to traditional damp mopping methods.

For carpet stains, act quickly by blotting (not rubbing) the stain with a clean cloth or paper towel. Use a carpet stain remover if needed, but test it in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t damage the carpet fibers.

Vacuum high-traffic areas at least once a week and other areas at least once a month. Frequent vacuuming helps prevent dirt and debris from settling deep into the carpet fibers.

You can use a home carpet cleaner or rent one from a local store for deep cleaning. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, and be cautious not to oversaturate the carpet, as excessive moisture can lead to mold or mildew growth.

Regular sweeping or vacuuming to remove dirt and dust is essential. For deeper cleaning, use a mop with a vinyl-specific cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can damage the vinyl’s finish.

While routine cleaning and maintenance are vital, professional cleaning can extend the life of your floors. We recommend professional cleaning every 12-18 months for carpets and luxury vinyl, and as needed for hardwood floors.

To prevent fading from sunlight, use window coverings like blinds, curtains, or UV-filtering window film. Rotate area rugs and furniture periodically to even out exposure.
